IPL 2026 Power Rankings: The Contenders, the Confused and the Cooked

Half a season is a big enough sample to mean something and a small enough one to argue about. That is precisely what power rankings are for. Here is where all ten teams stand as IPL 2026 reaches its midpoint.

Tier one: the pace-setters

Kolkata Knight Riders have built the league's most complete bowling attack around their spin pairing, and their batting - deep enough that a No. 8 with a strike rate of 160 sometimes doesn't bat - keeps winning the close ones. Their net run rate lead is the largest at the halfway stage in four seasons.

Tier two: the chasing pack

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, inevitably, are both here. Mumbai's engine is their powerplay bowling; no side has taken more wickets inside six overs. Chennai's is their chase-management, that familiar habit of keeping games shapeless until the last five overs, where they remain the best finishing side in the league.

The surprise member of the pack is a rejuvenated Royal Challengers Bengaluru batting order when conditions favour strokeplay - though as Eden Gardens demonstrated this week, quality spin on a gripping surface remains their recurring nightmare.

Tier three: the confused

Three franchises occupy the muddled middle, all with identical win-loss records and wildly different trajectories. The pattern connecting them: top-heavy batting. Between them, their top threes have scored 61 per cent of their runs - the joint-highest dependency ratio the league has seen since such things were tracked.

Tier four: the cooked

For the two teams at the bottom, the mathematics are not yet fatal but the cricket looks it. Both have lost every match defending a total; both have death-overs economy rates north of eleven. The auction dynamics that created these squads - all batting, no yorkers - were flagged in March. April has confirmed them.
