Kohli's 71 in Vain as KKR's Spin Web Strangles RCB at Eden

There is a particular sound Eden Gardens makes when Sunil Narine is bowling well - a low hum of anticipation that spikes into a roar every time a batter misreads him. On Friday night it barely stopped humming for eight overs, and by the time it finished, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's chase of 197 had died of asphyxiation.

The chase that never breathed

RCB's pursuit began well enough. Virat Kohli, dropped into his favourite tempo, moved to a 31-ball half-century built almost entirely on placement, and the required rate stayed within touching distance through ten overs. But at the other end, wickets kept leaking to spin.

Glenn Maxwell's 32 off 18 briefly promised fireworks before Narine slid one through the reverse sweep. Rajat Patidar chipped Varun Chakravarthy's wrong'un to short cover. Between them, KKR's two mystery men returned a combined 4 for 53 from eight overs - in a match where every other bowler went at better than ten an over.

Salt and Iyer set it up

The foundation had been laid in the first innings. Phil Salt's 54 off 34 punished anything short, and Shreyas Iyer's silky 46 kept the middle overs moving before Rinku Singh's unbeaten 33 off 17 supplied the late surge that carried KKR to 196 for 5.

Mohammed Siraj was RCB's one genuine bright spot with the ball, his 3 for 35 including two wickets with the new ball, but the support acts leaked freely.

The Kohli question that isn't one

Kohli's 71 off 47 will attract the usual strike-rate discourse, and the usual discourse will miss the point. With wickets tumbling at the other end, someone had to bat deep; nobody else passed 32. When he finally fell to Andre Russell in the 17th over, RCB needed 49 from 19 - a fair reflection of a night when one team had two match-winners with the ball and the other had none.

KKR climb to third. RCB, with three defeats in four, have a spin problem and two weeks to solve it.
